Bengal literatures are treasures for detective genre. Priyanath Mukhopadhyay is known as the first detective story writer of Bengal. He was born in Nadia, West Bengal in 1855. He was a detective of Calcutta Police during the British rule in India. He is famous for his literary work ‘Darogar Daptar’, which is a series of cases that he solved in his service life. He started the series in 1892 and gradually it became very famous because of his lucid way of explaining the details of every case that he handled.

His other notable works are ‘Ingrej Dakat’, ‘Khoon Na Churi’, ‘Tara Rahosyo’, and ‘Shesh Leela’. He was awarded with the title 'Roybahadur' by the British Government for his unparalleled bravery and exceptional commitment towards the service. His writings showed a new direction to the Bengali detective literature and the then socio-economic status of Bengal society has also been portrayed in his stories.
